Host gifts: what should I bring when I'm invited?
A good host gift is something your host doesn't have to use straight away, but that brings joy over the next few weeks. An aperitif does exactly that: it keeps, suits almost any occasion and comes with the next after-work moment built in. The only thing that matters is that it suits the people you're visiting.
What makes a good host gift?
Most gifts don't fail on taste, they fail on timing. Flowers need a vase right away, while your host is still at the door taking coats. A cake competes with the dessert that's long been waiting in the fridge. A good host gift doesn't create a task. It can wait.
Four questions help you choose:
- Does it have to be opened today? Better not. A gift that's for later takes the pressure off the evening.
- Does it suit the people? If they love having guests, they'll appreciate something to share. If they rarely drink, a small amount is better.
- Does it have a story? A product you can say two sentences about becomes a conversation starter.
- Does it look good without much wrapping? A beautiful bottle doesn't need gift wrap.
Why does an aperitif make a good gift?
Wine is the classic gift to bring. But it has a catch: your host has usually already planned the meal and chosen the wine to go with it. Your bottle ends up on the shelf, waiting for an occasion that may never come.
An aperitif has its occasion built in. It belongs to the hour before dinner – to Friday after work, to the moment when the first guests ring the bell. Anyone who receives a bottle knows straight away when to open it. You can read more about what makes an aperitif in What is an aperitif?.
Then there's storage. Unopened, ODE sits cool, dark and upright without anyone having to think about it. Once opened, the bottle goes in the fridge and stays good there for about three months. A 0.5 l bottle makes around ten glasses – enough for two or three evenings with friends.
Which flavour for whom?
If you know your hosts' tastes, you can choose with confidence. Two simple pointers:
| If they like … | a good place to start is | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Aperol Spritz, Hugo, limoncello | Bright Lemon | fresh and citrusy, Amalfi lemon and bergamot up front, thyme and rosemary on the finish |
| Negroni, vermouth, red bitter | Ruby Wood | bold, fruity, bitter – bitter orange, gentian, cinchona bark |
If you're not sure, the Flavour Finder will help with a few questions. Or simply bring both.
Twin Box: both flavours in one box
The Twin Box is made for exactly this. Inside are one bottle each of Bright Lemon and Ruby Wood (0.5 l), plus two recipe cards. The box is made from grass paper, so there's no need for extra gift wrap.
The advantage: your hosts can compare. Bright Lemon for the afternoon outdoors, Ruby Wood for the evening. The recipe cards show how it's done – usually the 1:2 formula: one part ODE, two parts tonic, lots of ice. That way the gift becomes a small ritual for the evenings ahead.
A short sentence about where it comes from makes handing it over easier: ODE is a Riesling-based wine aperitif from Berlin, developed by two designers, with no artificial flavourings, no artificial colourings. That's all you need to say at the door.
Prefer something small? The Minis
Not every visit calls for a grand gesture. For a games night, a quick visit or as a thank-you to the neighbours, there are Bright Lemon and Ruby Wood as 100 ml Minis. The small bottles are made for tasting and fit in any coat pocket.
Minis are also a good choice if you don't know whether your hosts drink aperitifs at all. A small bottle is an invitation, not an obligation. If they like it, they'll know which flavour to go for next time.
What to keep in mind when you hand it over
- Mention that ODE is best cold. The most common mistake: not cold enough, no ice. ODE is based on white wine and should be treated like it.
- Don't expect the bottle to be opened straight away. A host gift belongs to the host – and so does the timing.
- Think about who's there. Alcohol is a gift for adults aged 18 and over. If children are joining in, hand the bottle directly to your hosts.
- No pressure on price. A host gift should bring joy, not impress. A Mini with a kind word often means more than a grand gesture.
